Custom Peak Lists by Livingston Douglas

Livingston Douglas has created 40 custom peak lists on the Lists of John (LOJ) website and has made them publicly available to all climbers. His lists include all peaks (ranked and unranked) within each of the following mountain ranges as identified on LOJ. Additionally, he has compiled lists for the Idaho County HPs, Idaho peaks on the Continental Divide, and Idaho’s Border Peaks. These lists will allow you to track your progress as well as fellow climbers’ progress on each list.

LOJ provides peak lists (by individual state) in several categories:  by elevation ranges (e.g., 11ers), by individual Idaho counties (e.g., Custer County), by prominence (2000+, 1000+), by top 50/100/200/300 peaks, by national forest, by wilderness area, and by national parks. But LOJ does NOT provide lists based on MOUNTAIN RANGES as Liv Douglas has done with his custom lists.

Albion Range: Idaho’s Albion Mountains  (Track Progress)

Bannock Range: Idaho’s Bannock Range Peaks  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Bannock Range includes the Malad Range, Pleasantview Hills, and Samaria Hills in its southern reaches. The Bannock Range is bounded by Pocatello (and I-86 and I-15) to the north, by the Utah state line to the south, by Arbon Valley and Pocatello Valley to the west, and by I-15 (in its northern section) and I-91 and the Clifton/Weston Highway (in its southern section) to the east.

Bear River Range: Idaho’s Bear River Range Peaks  (Track Progress)

Beaverhead Range: Idaho’s Beaverhead Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: Maps show much of the Beaverheads as also Bitterroot Mountains. Despite the confusing map labeling, local convention considers peaks extending southeast from Chief Joseph Pass all the way to Monida Pass as the Beaverhead Mountains. This list includes both the ID/MT border peaks as well as all peaks on the ID side of the state line.

Big Hole Mountains: Idaho’s Big Hole Mountains  (Track Progress)

Boise Mountains: Idaho’s Boise Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: My list excludes the Danskin Mountains, which are shown separately. The Danskins are located at the south end of the Boise Mountains and are mostly scrub hills. There are 50 Danskin Mountains and over 300 Boise Mountains, so I show them separately for purposes of clarity. I use the same boundary definitions for the Boise Mountains as Tom Lopez does in IACG except that he includes the Danskins as part of the Boise Mountains. I use a narrower definition of the Boise Mountains proper.

Boulder Mountains: Idaho’s Boulder Mountains  (Track Progress)

Cabinet Mountains: Idaho’s Cabinet Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Cabinet Mountains are bordered on the east side by the ID/MT state line and on the north side by the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry. These mountains are bounded on their west side by US-95 and Lake Pend Orielle. The Cabinet Mountains are bounded on the south side by ID-200 and the Clark Fork River. The low-elevation peaks on the north side of Lake Pend Orielle (and east of US-95) are considered to be part of the Cabinet Mountains according to IACG.

Caribou Mountains: Idaho’s Caribou Mountains  (Track Progress)

Centennial Mountains: Idaho’s Centennial Mountains  (Track Progress)

Coeur d’Alene Mountains: Idaho’s Coeur d’Alene Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Coeur d’Alene Mountains are bounded by the Coeur d’Alene River and the South Fork Coeur d’Alene River to the south. The northern boundary is the south side of Lake Pend Orielle. The eastern boundary is the ID/MT state line. The western boundary is US-95 from Coeur d’Alene to the south side of Lake Pend Orielle. Please note that the map labeling is confusing in the area around Lookout Pass. Maps show this area as both Bitterroot Mountains and Coeur d’Alene Mountains. Indeed, IACG considers the ridge crest to be Bitterroots but the ID side of the ridge crest to be Coeur d’Alene Mountains. As with the Beaverhead Mountains to the south (which are also simultaneously labeled as Bitterroot Mountains), I have included the ridge crest peaks in the Coeur d’Alene Mountains list for purposes of consistency and to avoid confusion regarding where the ridge crest peaks end and the ridge side peaks begin. This interpretation differs slightly from IACG.

Cold Springs Mountains: Idaho’s Cold Springs Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Cold Springs Mountains are the northern extension of the rugged Seven Devils Mountains. They are bounded by the Salmon River both to the north and to the east. The Cold Springs Mountains are bounded by the Snake River to the west. They are bounded by the Seven Devils Mountains to the south at Cold Springs Mountains HP and ridges emanating from the HP.

Cuddy Mountains: Idaho’s Cuddy Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Cuddy Mountains are a southern extension of the rugged Seven Devils Mountains. They sit just north of the Hitt Mountains and begin at East Brownlee Creek at Heath. The Cuddy Mountains are bounded by the Snake River and Wild Horse River to the west and the Weiser River to the east. The north end of the Cuddy Mountains meets the Seven Devils Mountains at the Crooked River. Based on map labels, the Cuddy Mountains end in a narrow prow/peninsula of sorts. Based on topography, the lower ramparts of the Seven Devils Mountains surround this prow on both the east and west sides.

Danskin Mountains: Idaho’s Danskin Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: For the sake of clarity, I show the Danskin Mountains separate from the Boise Mountains. The Danskin Mountains are located north of Mountain Home and southeast of Boise. They are bounded by the Snake River Plain to the south, the Bennett Hills and Soldier Mountains to the east, the South Fork Boise River to the north, and the Boise River/Lucky Peak Reservoir to the west.

Deep Creek Mountains: Idaho’s Deep Creek Mountains  (Track Progress)

Hitt Mountains: Idaho’s Hitt Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Hitt Mountains are the southernmost extension of the rugged Seven Devils Mountains. The south end of the Hitt Mountains is at Weiser. The Hitt Mountains are bounded by the Weiser River to the east and by the Snake River to the west. The north end of the Hitt Mountains is East Brownlee Creek at Heath, which separates the Hitt Mountains from the Cuddy Mountains to the north.

Idaho’s Border Peaks: Idaho’s Border Peaks  (Track Progress)

Idaho’s Continental Divide: Idaho’s Continental Divide Peaks  (Track Progress)

Idaho County HPs: Idaho’s County High Points  (Track Progress)

Lemhi Range: Idaho’s Lemhi Mountains  (Track Progress)

Lost River Range: Idaho’s Lost River Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: I include the Arco Hills and “Howe Hills” as part of the Lost River Mountains. They are the southern extremities of the Lost Rivers. Their proximity to the toe of the higher Lost Rivers justifies their inclusion.

Mount Bennett Hills: Idaho’s Bennett Hills  (Track Progress)

Notes: For simplicity, I call them the Bennett Hills rather than the Mount Bennett Hills (map) or the Bennett Mountains Hills (IACG). I consider the west boundary of the Bennett Hills to be Bennett Creek rather than US-20.

Owyhee Mountains: Idaho’s Owyhee Mountains  (Track Progress)

Pahsimeroi Range: Idaho’s Pahsimeroi Mountains  (Track Progress)

Pioneer Mountains: Idaho’s Pioneer Mountains  (Track Progress)

Purcell Mountains: Idaho’s Purcell Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Purcell Mountains are bounded by the Canadian border to the north and the Kootenai River to the south. The Kootenai River also serves as the west border and the ID/MT state line is the east border.

Saint Joe Mountains: Idaho’s Saint Joe Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Saint Joe Mountains are bounded by the Coeur d’Alene River and Coeur d’Alene Lake to the west and by the North Fork Saint Joe River and Bitterroot Mountains to the east. The Saint Joe Mountains are bounded by the Coeur d’Alene River and South Fork Coeur d’Alene River (along US-90) to the north and by the Saint Joe River to the south. These boundaries are consistent with IACG.

Sawtooth Range: Idaho’s Sawtooth Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Sawtooth Mountains are a component of the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA). The SNRA includes some of the Boulder Mountains, Smoky Mountains, White Cloud Mountains, Eastern Salmon River Mountains, and Sawtooths. I use the same boundaries for the Sawtooths as Tom Lopez does in IACG. Note that the northwest border of the Sawtooths extends beyond the SNRA to a corner south of a sharp turn in ID-21 northwest of Stanley. The southern boundary with the Smoky Mountains is a bit murky. According to Tom, the Sawtooths extend south to a high ridgeline (that is mis-labeled as Smoky Mountains on maps) located south of Alturas Lake. The west border and southwest border of the Sawtooths is defined by the SNRA border.

Selkirk Mountains: Idaho’s Selkirk Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The north boundary of the Selkirks is the Canadian border. The south boundary is Windy Bay at the southwest corner of Coeur d’Alene Lake. The west boundary of the Selkirks is the ID/WA state line. The east boundary (from south to north) is Coeur d’Alene Lake then US-95 from Coeur d’Alene to Sandpoint (including the peaks on the west side of Lake Pend Orielle but east of US-95) then US-95/US-2 from Sandpoint to Bonners Ferry then the Kootenai River from Bonners Ferry to the Canadian border.

Seven Devils Mountains: Idaho’s Seven Devils Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The rugged Seven Devils Mountains informally include the Cold Springs Mountains to the north and the Cuddy Mountains and Hitt Mountains to the south. I provide separate lists for each of these other ranges. The more strict definition of the Seven Devils Mountains is bounded by the Cuddy Mountains to the south, the Snake River to the west, and the Cold Springs Mountains to the north. The Seven Devils Mountains are bounded to the east by the Little Salmon River (south of Riggins) and the Salmon River (north of Riggins).

Smoky Mountains: Idaho’s Smoky Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Smoky Mountains are bordered by ID-75 to the east, the Soldier and Boise Mountains to the west, the Sawtooth Mountains to the north, and US-20 to the south. The northern border is a bit confusing. There is a high ridgeline southwest of Galena Summit that serves as the northern border of the Smoky Mountains. The ridgeline itself is considered to be Sawtooth Mountains (according to Tom Lopez), contrary to the map’s mis-labeling this ridge as Smoky Mountains. The northwest corner of the Smoky Mountains is near Marshall Peak which, according to Tom, is in the Smoky Mountains. The three peaks at the headwaters of the South Fork Boise River (Peak 9805, Peak 9011, and Peak 9303) are not considered to be part of the Smoky Mountains. The Smoky Mountains are located east of the South Fork Boise River and south of the high ridgeline that is the south end of the Sawtooth Mountains.

Snake River Plain Buttes: Idaho’s Snake River Plain Peaks  (Track Progress)

Snake River Mountains: Idaho’s Snake River Mountains  (Track Progress)

Soldier Mountains: Idaho’s Soldier Mountains  (Track Progress)

South Hills: Idaho’s South Hills  (Track Progress)

Sublett Range: Idaho’s Sublett Mountains  (Track Progress)

West Mountains: Idaho’s West Mountains  (Track Progress)

Notes: The West Mountains are bounded by the North Fork Payette River and Cascade Reservoir to the east. These mountains are bounded by the Snake River (from Payette to Weiser) and the Weiser River (northeast from Weiser) to the west. The West Mountains are bounded by ID-55 and US-95 to the north in the New Meadows area. These mountains are bounded by the Payette River to the south from Horseshoe Bend to Emmett to Payette.

Western Peaks: Idaho’s Western Peaks  (Track Progress)

Notes: The Western Peaks are a playground for Boise-based climbers. This comprehensive list includes the West Mountains, the Hitt Mountains, the Cuddy Mountains, the Seven Devils Mountains, and the Cold Springs Mountains. It also includes 6 stragglers located between Emmett and Caldwell, none of which are included in the aforementioned lists. This area extends from Boise/Caldwell in the south all the way to White Bird in the north. It is bounded by the Snake River to the west and a combination of ID-55, the North Fork Payette River, Cascade Reservoir, the Little Salmon River, and the Salmon River to the east.

White Cloud Mountains: Idaho’s White Cloud Mountains  (Track Progress)

White Knob Mountains: Idaho’s White Knob Mountains  (Track Progress)
