Berg Mountain is located 4.5 miles east of Riggins, Idaho and two miles north of the Salmon River. It is the southwestern-most Clearwater Mountains summit and is easily accessed from Riggins. This peak is a good early-season destination. USGS Riggins Hot Springs
Access
Access this peak from Riggins by taking Big Salmon River Road/FSR-1614 east for 9.7 miles to Allison Creek Road/FSR-221. Follow FSR-221 for 2.9 miles to a junction with FSR-263. To climb this peak by John Platt’s route, follow FSR-263 to the point shown on the map below. Follow FSR-263 to its signed junction with FSR-263A. Note: you can continue to follow FSR-263 to Square Saddle (9.4 miles from the start of FSR-263) and climb the peak via a shorter hike from its north side.
East Rib/Southeast Ridge, Class 2
John’s route used [gated] FSR-263A to reach a rib that climbs due west to the peak’s Southeast Ridge. Climb up the rib to the Southeast Ridge and follow it to the summit. Use the link below to read John Platt’s trip report for additional details and photos.
