Blacktail Mountain is located on the west side of Lake Pend Oreille, roughly 5.0 miles east of Cocallala, Idaho. The peak is one of 100 Idaho summits with more than two thousand feet of prominence (2,770 feet of prominence) which ensures it sees a few ascents by peakbaggers each year. Butler Mountain can also be accessed from the same trail. The forest service maintains this trail and it receives use from dirt bikes. USGS Cocalalla
From Sandpoint, take US-95 south 12.0 miles to Butler Creek Road (located on the left just past Tri-Con Bolt). Turn left and go 1.7 miles to Butler Creek Road/FS-230. Turn left onto FS-230 and go 2.7 miles to the end of the road. From the end of the road, hike up FST-117. About 3.0 miles up the trail, a spur trail leads to Blacktail Mountain. The main trail leads north from this junction to Butler Mountain.
