East Ridge, Class 2
The Climb
From the informal campsite, follow a cattle/use trail a short distance west to Cherry Creek. Cross the creek on a wooden footbridge (of sorts) hidden in the thick creekside willows. Once across the creek, follow a good cattle/use trail right/northwest into a large meadow of short grass. Cross to the northwest corner of the meadow and follow the Right Fork Cherry Creek drainage briefly southwest. Leave the drainage and cross the small stream to find a critical, dilapidated, old fence row.
Briefly follow the fence row west-southwest then leave it to scramble right/northwest up a steep scrub slope to a shoulder that sits above, and north of, the nearby fence row. Head west up this open, grassy shoulder to reach the forested head of a thickly-forested gully of maple trees. Once across the ridgeline at the head of the gully, bushwhack southwest up through a thick maple forest to find the fence row at a semi-open ridge corner. This bushwhack from 5,950 feet to 6,150 feet is the crux of this climb.
Follow the fence row west in easy, semi-open forest and scrub down 40 vertical feet to a saddle. From the saddle, head west up a steep-ish grass/scrub ridge with scattered mountain mahogany. The fence row soon ends. Continue west up the well-defined, narrow ridge crest and skirt (or battle with) the endless mountain mahogany trees on the ridge crest. Generally speaking, the right/north side is open, easy scrub and gravel but, high up, there is a thick section of mountain mahogany that forces you to skirt its left/south side.
You will soon reach the top of the east ridge at a juncture with the northeast ridge. Go left/southwest at this juncture and follow a cattle trail on the right/west side of the ridge crest to avoid mountain mahogany on the ridge crest. Cruise to the semi-open summit with a minor up-and-down along the way. The summit had a modest cairn on the high point.
