Thanks to LiDAR, Peak 7514 is now a ranked summit. It sits above the headwaters of both Aspen Creek and Left Fork Cherry Creek in the Bannock Range. Peak 7514 is the highest of a collection of foothills that are located south of Downey. It is most easily climbed from FST-406 to its southwest. USGS Oxford
Access
From US-91 at the south end of Downey, turn right/southwest onto [signed] Malad Highway (later signed as “Old Malad Highway”) at virtual MM36.6. At 2.1 miles, just after a bridge crossing, turn left/south onto [signed] Cherry Creek Road and reset your odometer. At 5.5 miles, enter the Caribou National Forest. At 7.3 miles, reach the end of the road at the signed trailhead for FST-406 (an ATV trail). Park here (5,830 feet and 42⁰18’18”N, 112⁰08’05”W).
Southwest Shoulder, Class 2
The Climb
From the Cherry Creek Trailhead for FST-406, hike about ½ mile east up the trail to a fork in the canyon and a signed trail junction. Go left to remain on FST-406 and follow the Left Fork Cherry Creek. Hike another 1-3/4 miles up FST-406 to reach the base of the southwest shoulder at about 6,620 feet. Leave the trail and scramble northeast up a steep-ish shoulder of somewhat-thick scrub with underlying loose scree/gravel. Aim for a rocky buttress near the top of the shoulder.
Skirt the left side of, or climb over, the buttress and work upward through some scattered (then denser) mountain mahogany. Reach the high summit ridge just left/west of the semi-open summit. Bash through a few more mountain mahogany trees as you head right/east and quickly reach the summit. The summit had no cairn so I built a modest one atop the sagebrush bush that is the high point. When descending the southwest shoulder, the loose scree/gravel will be bothersome.
