Peak 7818 is one of three 7,000-foot, ranked summits that sit on a high ridge that separates South Fork Rainey Creek from North Fork Rainey Creek in the Snake River Range northeast of Swan Valley, Idaho. Peak 7847 is to its east and Peak 7740 lies to its southwest on the same high ridge. It is most easily climbed in conjunction with Peak 7847. USGS Fourth of July Peak

Access

Same as for Peak 7847. This is the second leg of a 3-peak adventure that includes Peak 7847, Peak 7818, and Peak 7740. It covers 7.5 miles with 2,550 feet of elevation gain round trip.

Northeast Ridge, Class 2

The Climb

From the 7,480-foot connecting saddle with Peak 7847,bushwhack southwest up through pine forest then open scrub/scree to the open, conical summit of Peak 7818. The northeast ridge presents no difficulties.

South Ridge, Class 2

The Descent

From the summit, descend west then southwest through pine forest to reach open terrain. The connecting saddle with Peak 7740 is visible from here but there is a thick forested area between here and the saddle. This won’t be fun. Stay on the easier right/west side of the rounded ridge in open terrain for the least-punishing bushwhack through the dense trees and copious blowdown to reach the saddle, which becomes hidden when you enter the pine forest. You cannot reach the saddle in open terrain. The small saddle is forested and is at about 7,360 feet. It concludes the second leg of today’s 3-peak journey. Peak 7740 is up next.
