This rugged peak sits directly north of Joes Gap and White Mountain. It is west of Black Lake. USGS Purgatory Saddle
Peak 8540 as viewed from the summit of White Mountain. The south ridge is viewed straight on. The gully that Steve Grantham climbed is located to the right of the south ridge.

Routes
The peak’s south ridge is probably a broken, talus Class 3 slog from Joes Gap. Steve Grantham climbed the peak from FST-218 via a gully that leaves the trail approximately 0.25 miles east of Joes Gap. He descended the peak’s east ridge.
