This peak is not in the book. The map elevation is 8,753 feet. Published December 2024

Thanks to LiDAR, Peak 8791 is now a ranked summit. It gained a whopping 38 feet in elevation with the new measurements. This peak is most easily climbed from Copenhagen Basin Road/FSR-430 to its northeast. The summit area is a Class 3 concoction of massive ridge blocks that comes as a surprise. USGS Midnight Mountain

Access

From the junction of US-89 and ID-36 in Ovid, drive west on ID-36 for about 11 miles to the [signed] Emigration Campground (left). Continue another 1.2 miles west then south on ID-36 to an unsigned, paved turnoff (left). Leave the highway here and go left/east into a large campground parking area. Find FSR-430 (a narrow 2-track road) heading right/south soon after you enter this parking area. It is signed for FST-316/Highline Trail, not for FSR-430. Drive up FSR-430 for 1.7 miles to a signed road junction with FSR-937 (left) at a powerlines crossing. The road to this point is a narrow, but decent, 2-track road. After this point, it is much rougher and is suited best for ATVs. Park at this junction (8,126 feet).

The Climb

From the road junction, hike straight/south on FSR-430 for about 1.2 miles to a crest in the road at a broad saddle. Peak 8791 is directly southwest of here. Leave the road and bushwhack southwest across field grass and easy, flat pine forest to reach the northeast face. Scramble southwest up a steeper mix of scattered pines/aspens, ground boulders, and scrub to reach the massive boulders/blocks near the summit ridge. This bushwhack is not too onerous and it is short.

Search for the highest block on the summit ridge crest, which is semi-forested. This area is an unpleasant mess of large boulders/blocks, brush, and pines all mixed together. It is tedious to move around in this area. I stood atop the two highest ridge blocks. I believe that the west block is slightly higher than the east block. There is nothing higher than these two blocks. Due to the thick forest, there are no visuals of the summit area when climbing up to the summit area. Thankfully, the summit blocks offer superb views. There were no signs of previous ascent.
