Peak 8903 sits above the headwaters of Silver Creek, Polecamp Creek, and Muley Creek in the Eastern Salmon River Mountains. It is most easily reached via Silver Creek Trail (FST-4168) and FST-4169 via its north ridge. USGS Sunbeam

Access

Same as for Peak 8785. This is the second leg of a 3-peak adventure that includes Peak 8785, Peak 8903, and Peak 8057. It covers 8.2 miles with 3,700 feet of elevation gain round trip.

North Ridge, Class 2

The Climb

From the 8,360-foot connecting saddle with Peak 8785, scramble south up the ridge [initially] on [weak] FST-4169. The terrain is forested initially and is then open grass/scrub. The ridge finishes with a forested section that leads to the summit of Peak 8903. FST-4169 is good in the forested areas but is completely gone in the open meadows/scrub areas, which are a substantial part of this climb. High up, the trail crests on an east-west summit ridge. Leave the trail here and bushwhack right/west in open scrub to reach the high point. There were no signs of previous ascent. I built a decent cairn on the semi-open high point with lots of available talus.

Northwest Face, Class 2

The Descent

From the summit, head northwest along the forested ridge and cross an old road (now FST-4169) at an old mine. Continue northwest up over a minor hump (a 30-foot climb). Continue northwest down into a thick pine forest with heavy downfall. Stumble into a drainage heading northwest then north and bash through thick brush and heavy blowdown. Leave the drainage and bushwhack northwest on a shoulder to emerge at a saddle at the base of the east ridge of Peak 8057.

This 7,580-foot saddle is the connecting saddle between Peak 8903 and Peak 8057. It concludes the second leg of today’s 3-peak journey. Peak 8057 is up next. In retrospect, I would advise descending the north ridge of Peak 8903 to FST-4168. Follow FST-4168 west down to the saddle area and leave the trail to climb the east ridge of Peak 8057. The forest bushwhack directly from Peak 8903 to the saddle is simply brutal. Avoid it at all costs.
