Elevation: 9,980 ft
Prominence: 520
This peak is not in the book. Given its location near many famous peaks (Warbonnett and the Verita Ridge complex for example), it has surprisingly been long overlooked by the many climbers who have visited the area since the 1940s. Derek Percoski climbed this peak in 2024. His climb was possibly a first ascent. His route and photos are set out below. Updated December 2024
Peak 9980 is located just west of the main Sawtooth Crest and Mount Underhill. This peak is remote and difficult to reach. Derek suspects that when the LiDAR data for this area is published (2026?) this peak will be recognized as a 10er as his “phone’s GPS gave an elevation of 10,010-10,015 feet.” While the peak has probably been climbed previously, I have not learned of any recorded ascents. Access
Peak 9980 is accessed from the area of Feather Lakes in the Goat Creek drainage [(A)(6)(c.3) on Page 207].
Southwest Face, Class 2+, Class 4 Summit Block by Derek Percoski
The summit block can easily be reached with Class-2+ hiking up the southwest face (my ascent route) from Packrat Lake or the southeast face (my descent route) from the Peak 9980/Underhill saddle. The last 100 feet or so is a scramble on large boulders. While it is mostly Class 3, making a couple moves with mild exposure is necessary. I poked around on the way up and way down and couldn’t see a way to keep it Class 3. I’ll call it Class 4 but by Sawtooth standards it’s probably more like Class 3+. On July 5, 2024, I found no signs of prior visitation.
