This peak has been used as a fire lookout since 1934 and is still staffed. The heavy forest in this area gives way to a rocky summit and the lookout structure. Lewis and Clark came by the peak on their way to the Pacific. The view to the west from the lookout includes a big section of ridges that the Lolo Trail (Lewis and Clark’s route) follows west. USGS Rocky Point
Access and Route, Class 1
The roads to the lookout are occasionally maintained. Google Maps provides good directions to the summit from the Powell Ranger Station. It is 9.0 miles from the ranger station to the summit. The lookout in 2021 used a Honda Element to reach the tower. There are a few rough spots.
